Fox News' Sean Hannity is backing up Donald Trump's insistence he was firmly opposed to the Iraq war, saying the GOP nominee frequently offered that exact opinion in calls to Hannity's show at the time.
However, tapes of the old remarks have so far been unavailable, the New York Times reported.
"He would watch the TV show and call me, and he and I would go at it over the Iraq war," Hannity told the Times. "I remember these conversations vividly. I remember saying to him, 'I agree with you, take the oil! But this is why we need to go into Iraq.'"
Hannity said though he is relying on his memory, "I've had people go through the archives and unfortunately we've changed syndicators and stations and it's hard to get ahold of," the Times reported.
According to the Times, Trump also has claimed he had a meeting with George W. Bush administration officials to discuss his war opposition.
"In fact, a delegation was sent to my office to see me, because I was so vocal about it," Trump has claimed, the Times reported.
But the Times reported an unnamed former Bush White House senior official denies there was ever a meeting with Trump – and no one from the administration was deputized to talk to Trump.
