The main reason Democrats want immigration reform is so that the legalized immigrants will vote Democrat, says Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
"That’s common sense. I don’t think that’s something that nobody knows. You make them here legally so they can vote,"
Arpaio said in an interview Sunday on "Aaron Klein Investigative Radio."
"There's a push afoot nationally to sign up more Hispanics to be able to vote," the Arizona sheriff explained. "But you have to be careful now. If you legalize these guys, these people, they are going to vote."
The Washington Times reported in February that there was a loophole in
President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration that allowed the immigrants affected by the action the ability to register to vote, Ohio and Kansas state officials said. However,
that executive action failed in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in May.
Arpaio also had some advice for Republicans running for president in 2016 when they discuss illegal immigration — make sure drug trafficking is part of that conversation.
"Everyone talks about immigration. What about the drugs destroying our young people? Heroin is increasing. So if I were advising the (Republican) candidates, I’m sure they will be calling me even though I’m taking heat again, I’d say start talking about the drug problem coming from Mexico," he said.
"Forget just the illegal immigration. Put it together. There is a combination of both problems. That’s what I would talk about," he added.
