John Oliver Offers Trump Emmy Award If He Accepts Election Results

By    |   Monday, 24 October 2016 01:36 PM EDT

Comedian John Oliver offered Donald Trump an Emmy award if the Republican presidential candidate agrees to accept the results of the presidential election. He made the offer during an episode of his HBO comedy series "Last Week Tonight."

Oliver noted that, in the third presidential debate between Trump Hillary Clinton, it was pointed out that Trump had accused the Emmy awards of being rigged when his show "The Apprentice" did not win, similar to how he and his supporters have made claims about voter fraud.

During the debate, Trump responded, "I should have gotten it," referring to the Emmy award, which honors TV shows and performers.

Oliver said, "Of course he wants an Emmy. It's a woman, it's gold, and it's proportionate to his tiny hands. It's basically Trump's ideal mate."

The Republican candidate does not appear likely to concede the election in a way that helps bring together voters instead of continuing to divide them, Oliver said, so he proposed a bet.

"I will take the side that you win. You will take the side that you lose. That way, if you lose, you still win and, as for the stakes in the bet, I have something that I know you want."

Then the host displayed an Emmy award, which his show won for best variety talk series. He called on Trump to accept the bet with a joke about the female-shaped Emmy statue: "You don't even have to take her furniture shopping. Take the bet, Donald."

"Last Week Tonight" is a satirical news show that has made Trump a frequent target of jokes. In one episode, Oliver claimed that Trump's family name was originally "Drumpf."
