WH Spokesman Grilled Over State of the Union Interviewers

By    |   Thursday, 15 January 2015 05:02 PM EST

Following up on news that three YouTube personalities, Bethany Mota, GloZell Green and Hank Green, will be interviewing President Barack Obama after his State of the Union address on Tuesday, CNN's David Acosta asked whether the White House was trying to "jazz things up" since some have suggested the State of the Union is "not what it used to be."

"Just noticing that these folks who are going to be conducting these interviews are not professional journalists, they're people who post videos on YouTube, and I'm just curious, was 'Charlie Bit My Finger' or 'David After Dentist' not available?" Acosta asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest during Thursday's daily press briefing.

Earnest defended the interviews, saying they are simply a "variation on a theme" of Google Hangouts that Obama has done in the past.

Mota's YouTube videos are mostly about fashion. Hank Green rants on various subjects as part of the Vlog Brothers, while GloZell Green posts comedy videos, often in outrageous makeup, including green lipstick.

The videos referenced by Acosta are popular "cute kid" videos, one in which a toddler bites his brother's finger, causing consternation, and another in which a young boy is filmed by his dad under the effects of nitrous oxide after a dental visit.
