Kelly Ward is joining President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder's project to focus on redistricting, according to Politico.
Ward, director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, will be the interim executive director of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
The group aims to direct resources at races on the state legislature and governor level, looking ahead to rounds of state legislatures and House of Representatives districts that will be redistricted in 2021.
Many of the current maps for those areas represent Republican gerrymandering, which is a "fundamental challenge to our democracy," Ward said.
After the presidential election, Democrats have been given a wake-up call, Ward said.
"Democrats need to build up from the states, and we also need to take the rigged power out of the hands of the Republicans. They have spent years constructing the system so it works in their favor. Until we can undo that, we will be limited in our ability to really fix the system overall."
Out of nine House seats that Democrats won in the 2016 election, four were in districts that had been redrawn since the last election.
"Fair redistricting represents one of the major turning points for the future of our nation. Kelly Ward has the trust of House Democrats and brings a wealth of electoral experience that will be vital to Democrats' redistricting strategy," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, according to Politico.
At the DNCC, Ward gained praise for her work with the party. "The members felt very much that she was on their side, fighting for them," Democratic pollster Jef Pollock said.
