Lewandowski: Trump Campaign Understands Rules, but Finds Them Unfair

("Fox News Sunday")

Donald Trump's campaign understands GOP delegate rules, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said Sunday, but that doesn't mean the campaign think they're fair.

"We understand what happens," Lewandowski told "Fox News Sunday"  in an interview where he referred to Trump as the party's "presumptive nominee."

"There are people out there who don't have the ability to write a check," Lewandowski said about some of the delegates being picked through conventions being held in such states as Colorado and Wyoming, where rival GOP challenger Ted Cruz ended up with the most delegates.

"Party bosses pick the delegates" in such states, Lewandowski said, telling the program that Cruz does better where conventions are held.

Trump currently leads the delegate count with 744, followed by Cruz with 559 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, with 144. Under convention rules, the candidate who has 1,237 delegates would clinch the nomination.

Trump has won in state contests such as Florida, where there are larger delegate polls, but Cruz has won some delegates by campaigning at the state and county conventions. He won all 14 delegates at Wyoming's event, where he gave a speech to the convention delegates before they voted.

Lewandowski on Sunday, though, said that if the party wants a nominee who can win the general election in the fall, "it needs to pick Donald Trump."

He said he believes Trump will do well in Tuesday's primary in New York, but would not predict a sweep for control of the 95 delegates at stake. He also said Trump will do well in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, and be the "presumptive nominee."

The campaign manager also on Sunday said he was happy that Florida officials did not continue with charges that he had assaulted former Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields by grabbing her by the arm when she tried to question Trump after a press conference.

However, he declined to apologize and said he plans to speak privately with Fields, and has called her but she didn't return his calls. And even though she said he hasn't called her, Lewandowski told the show the Palm Beach, Florida police have phone records showing he did try.
