Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon described the firing of former FBI Director James Comey as the biggest mistake "in modern political history."
Bannon made the comment during an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes Overtime" on Sunday.
Bannon said he would stand by media reports that he opposed Comey's firing last May, adding he didn't know if Jared Kushner, White House adviser and son-in-law of President Donald Trump, was also in favor of Comey's firing.
Trump fired Comey to restore "public trust and confidence" in the FBI. Just over a week later, the Justice Department named former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead an investigation into claims Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election and colluded with the Trump campaign.
There would be no Russia investigation, Bannon maintained, if Comey had not been fired.
"I don't think there's any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired we would not have a special counsel," he said. "We would not have the Mueller investigation. We would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going."
Bannon added he didn't think Trump should fire Mueller from the Russia probe.
