Republican nominee Donald Trump has announced he will make a much anticipated major speech on his immigration policy on Wednesday.
He made the declaration in a tweet.
Trump was originally scheduled to give a speech on the subject last week, but it was delayed as his campaign continued to decide on the exact policy and how to phrase it, CNN reports.
Trump’s stance on immigration has been a major plank of his campaign, including a pledge to build a wall on the border with Mexico and create a deportation force to rid the country of millions of undocumented people.
Trump has questioned whether people born in the United States to people here illegally are citizens — even though they have automatically been considered citizens since the adoption of the 14th Amendment in 1868.
But lately, he's been exploring the issue's complexities in public.
Last week Trump told Sean Hannity of Fox News that his is open to altering his position on illegal immigrants already living in the United States.
When asked by Hannity if he would change current parts of the law with respect to law-abiding illegal immigrants who have raised a family in the U.S. and who have contributed to society, Trump said, "There could certainly be a softening because we’re not looking to hurt people."
But the exact details and scope of his proposed changes were further put into question when a few days later Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper "there is no path to legalization [for undocumented immigrants] unless they leave the country and then come back."
Trump made clear that illegal immigrants who had committed crimes would be deported immediately, but he declined to say if this policy would apply to other undocumented aliens, stressing that once the initial deportations occur, "then we can talk."
