Millions of Americans are "getting clobbered" by Obamacare premium increases, and it's a high priority to put together healthcare reform that works for everyone, Dr. Ben Carson, one of President-elect Donald Trump's key advisers, said on Thursday.
Carson, who ended his own run for president in March, said the costs for providing insurance for those who couldn't afford insurance meant many others could also no longer afford coverage,
"That kind of thing doesn't work," the retired neurosurgeon said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "[It's a] high priority for us to put something together that works for everybody."
Trump has been talking about health savings accounts, Carson said, and that is "a concept that works extraordinarily well."
"Many people are using it already in different states, and it provides an opportunity for the patient and the health care provider to work directly together without having a bunch of bureaucrats in between, who really are not needed," Carson said.
"What do you need for good health care? A patient and health care provider. Along comes the middleman to facilitate, becomes a major entity dictating to the patient and physician, and they don't even need to be there. We want to design something that realizes that."
There are already many in the House and Senate who have put out some good ideas for healthcare reform, Carson said, and there is general agreement reform and repeal measures are needed, so something will be rolled out quickly.
"The principle here is to put out something that is so attractive, you don't have to cajole and force people into it," Carson said. "This is the way it should be working."
