Former Navy SEAL Carl Higbie is denying a report that he had recently interviewed for the press secretary position in the Trump administration.
According to the Washingtonian Magazine, Higbie was interviewed Thursday for the position, two top Trump administration officials said Friday, but he declined to confirm.
"Well, I can say that I've offered my services," Higbie said Friday. "I haven't heard back from the administration yet.
"I'm honored to be even considered for this."
He said that he had spoken with "a number of people" regarding the post.
Later Friday night, Higbie took to Twitter to set the record straight:
Sean Spicer is the administration's current press secretary. His future remained unclear, including whether he would become White House communications director.
That post has been vacant since Jason Miller stepped down before Trump's inauguration last month amid allegations of an affair with a fellow aide.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the Washingtonian reports.
Higbie, 33, who served in Iraq, is close to the Trump family, particularly Eric Trump. They met last year after Higbie appeared on Fox News, according to the Washingtonian.
A Trump surrogate during the campaign, he also was spokesman for the Great America PAC, which had endorsed the Republican candidate.
He is the author of two books, the latest being "Enemies, Foreign and Domestic: A SEAL's Story."
Higbie this week attacked Vietnam War veteran John McCain for slamming last month's Yemen raid as "unsuccessful" — suggesting that the Arizona senator should apologize.
A Navy SEAL, Chief Special Warfare Operator William "Ryan" Owens, 36, from Peoria, Ill., died Jan. 28 from wounds suffered during the weekend attack on the al-Qaida base.
Higbie also squared off with the senator's daughter, Meghan McCain, on Twitter over the remarks.
