President Donald Trump is "trolling the press" by posting tweets critical of the media, conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer said Monday.
Krauthammer appeared on Fox News' "Special Report" and spoke about Trump's habit of trashing the media on a near-daily basis in 140 characters or less.
"This is the way in which he conducts himself, in which he stabilizes himself psychologically, I would guess looking from the outside," said Krauthammer, a psychiatrist. "And it's not the fact that he tweets — for God's sake, the Pope tweets. There's nothing wrong with tweeting intrinsically.
"I think he's trolling the press. This CNN bit I found rather amusing. It was meant to drive them crazy, to get an overreaction, to get attention, and to heighten the contradictions, if you want to use a Leninist term, between him and the press, or his adversaries and the press, and solidify his base.
"So, there's some strategy here. Not much. The rest is a psychological need and who knows, perhaps this is therapy for him."
Mediaite posted a clip of Krauthammer's remarks.
On Sunday, Trump tweeted a video of his 2007 appearance on "Wrestlemania," during which he beat up World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Vince McMahon. In the video, however, McMahon's head was replaced by a logo that said "FNN," which looked like CNN.
Conservative radio host Michael Savage joined a chorus of people from both sides of the aisle by saying last Friday Trump should stop tweeting.
"These psychos in the media, he's giving them exactly what they want, which is publicity," Savage said. "Since we're talking about whether these tweets are hurting his agenda, then they're hurting his agenda."
