Downplaying his endorsement of Hillary Clinton, Missouri Democrat Chris Koster said there were times he agreed with her and stuff he disagreed on, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
"You know, there's stuff that I agree with her on and there's stuff I disagree with her on," Koster said in an interview with St. Louis radio host Mark Reardon, who asked him whether he "enthusiastically supported" the Democratic nominee for president.
Koster, who is looking to succeed outgoing Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon as the governor of Missouri, will face a tough struggle given Donald Trump's commanding lead over Clinton among Missouri voters.
According to RealClearPolitics average of three September polls, Trump has a thumping 10-point lead over Clinton.
Clinton, however, was all praises for Koster during a December event in St. Louis for leading the "Hillary for Missouri Leadership Council".
Republican nominee Eric Greitens mocked Koster for refusing to stand by his endorsement.
"In typical career-politician fashion Chris Koster has endorsed Hillary Clinton and her policies but now refuses to actually say the words," Greitens campaign manager Austin Chambers told the Free Beacon. "They are largely the same candidate: both support Obamacare expansion in Missouri, both want higher taxes, and both have been the subject of investigations regarding their shady fundraising and corrupt pay to play practices."
In another development, Koster threatened to cancel the debate with Greitens until the Republican released his tax returns for the years 2012 through 2015, according to ABC News.
Koster's campaign sent a note to Greitens' campaign manager, stating that Koster released his own returns last Thursday. The letter also stated that the former Navy SEAL had promised to release his returns once Koster did so, but hasn't kept his promise.
Koster, who is serving his second term as attorney general, showed in his tax returns he made $113,000 in 2015, most of which was his salary as a state wide elected official.
He also attacked the philanthropist's veteran's charity organization The Mission Continues hinting at tax returns.
"Well, let's wait until the tax returns. I think he's going to release his tax returns this week. So let's wait and see what happens," Koster said when he was told that the charity has helped thousands of veterans in the country.
Koster leads Greitens by 11 points, according to RealClearPolitics.
