New FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday told lawmakers that the agency has 1,000 active domestic terrorism cases on top of another 1,000 open cases involving foreign terrorists, The Hill reported.
It's all terrorism, Wray said before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
"We take both of them very, very seriously,” Wray told the committee. "Our focus is on violence and threats of violence against the people of this country. That’s our concern — it’s not ideology."
Wray was pushed by Democratic senators about doing more about terrorism at the hands of white supremacists; the violent and fatal clashes at an August alt-right gathering in Charlottesville still front and center for lawmakers, The Hill reported.
"We have had zero hearings on the threat of domestic terrorists and the threat they pose and our response to it," said Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, pointing out the disparity of having multiple hearings about ISIS when white supremacists account for three times the amount of attacks in the U.S., The Hill reported.
