Donald Trump's adult children ganged up on campaign manager Corey Lewandowski during a meeting Monday morning, prompting Lewandowski to tell Trump he wanted to leak his vice presidential pick — which ultimately led to his firing.
New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman reports that Trump's kids — daughter Ivanka and sons Eric and Donald Jr. — bombarded Lewandowski with questions shortly after the meeting began at 9:30 a.m. at Trump Tower in Manhattan. The campaign was coming off a rough week, punctuated by
poll numbers that show Trump is trailing Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Lewandowski, reports the magazine, was asked by Trump what he would do to solve the campaign's troubles. His answer was to leak the real estate mogul's running mate choice, which Trump was flatly against.
Lewandowski was then fired and escorted out of the building, according to the report.
Lewandowski, whose campaign duties were dealt a blow last month when
Paul Manafort was named campaign chairman, was
set up by the Trump kids on Monday. They had been plotting his exit for weeks and, according to the New York Magazine report, used the campaign's rough week — Trump drew criticism for
his statements on Muslims and
gun control — as a way of demonstrating to their father he was unfit to continue working on the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's campaign.
