Texas Pro-Choice Hero Wendy Davis Expected to Launch Gubernatorial Bid

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis is expected next month to announce a bid for the governor's mansion, ending months of speculation about her political aspirations.

The Washington Post
reports
the Democrat hinted at a bid in an email sent to her supporters Wednesday, saying she will be "answering the question" of what's next for her career on Oct. 3.

A Democrat who has been in touch with Davis' camp confirmed her intention to run, the Post says.

The 50-year-old legislator made a national name for herself in June after successfully mounting a 13-hour filibuster in the state Legislature to halt legislation restricting abortion after 20 weeks.

In her email message, Davis went on to appeal for help building her support through social media.

"Do you have any friends or family who would like to be among the first to know?" she wrote. "Share this on Facebook and tweet it to your followers to let your friends know how they can sign up to receive the news early.

"I truly appreciate all the work that you — my grassroots team — have done so far. And I'm excited about what we can do together in the future. Thank you for all of your support — and thanks for spreading the word!"

Davis first floated the idea of a gubernatorial bid at an August National Press Club luncheon, saying at the time, "I can say with absolute certainty that I will run for one of two offices: my state Senate seat or for the governor."

GOP Gov. Rick Perry already has announced he will not run for another term next year. If Davis runs, she faces an uphill battle against Republican state Attorney General Greg Abbott, who has already raised $20 million toward his campaign, the Post reports.
