Three Republican senators could stop the push to "steamroll" a healthcare law that could affect people all across the United States, Sen. Dick Durbin said Tuesday.
"[This] bill that has not been read or seen by the members of the United States Senate," the Illinois Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.
"No one on the Democratic side knows anything about the substance of this bill. All we know is that it's being pushed through without a hearing, without even being read, without being scored. At the very last minute, it's a take it or leave it on a process called reconciliation."
But if three Republican senators "say this is the wrong way to pass legislation," and that it should instead be done on a more open basis, that could stop the Senate's version of the American Health Care plan from passing.
Durbin also commented on Tuesday's race in Georgia to replace former Rep. Tom Price, who is now Health and Human Services secretary.
The race is running neck-and-neck, between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel, and Durbin said if Ossoff pulls off a win, it will be historic, as for almost 40 years, Republicans have held Georgia's 6th Congressional District seat.
"Tom Price won by 23 points," said Durbin. President Donald Trump also won the seat, which includes part of Atlanta, but by a much more narrow margin.
"It's a strong Republican district, but we have a powerful district, and we've never seen money spent like this in any congressional race," said Durbin.
Ossoff is focused on local issues, said Durbin, and almost won the election in the first round.
Durbin, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also commented on rumors last week that Trump could be considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in order to bring on someone who will be willing to fire Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor in the Russia election investigation.
If Trump does that, the United States "would be knocking on the door of a constitutional crisis, period," said Durbin.
"The notion that we could have another Saturday Night Massacre as we did under President [Richard] Nixon and have business as usual afterwards is unacceptable. At that point we have to stand for principle. "
