Rand Paul: Force John Roberts Into Obamacare

Rand Paul: Force John Roberts Into Obamacare

By    |   Tuesday, 24 September 2013 02:09 PM EDT

If Chief Justice John Roberts is such a fan of President Barack Obama's healthcare plan, he should not be prevented from receiving its benefits, Sen. Rand Paul says.

And now Paul is planning to introduce a constitutional amendment to ensure that Roberts — and all other federal employees — are forced into the Obamacare system.

"My amendment says basically that everybody including Justice Roberts — who seems to be such a fan of Obamacare — gets it too," the Kentucky senator told the Daily Caller.

Roberts cast the deciding vote in June 2012 that allowed nearly all of Obamacare to stand. The four other Supreme Court justices normally considered conservative all voted against.

Now Paul wants to outlaw all exemptions, including for members of Congress, making sure taxpayers and lawmakers are treated equally under the Affordable Care Act. His planned constitutional amendment would ensure that federal employees do not get special exemptions from the law of the land.

"Right now, Justice Roberts is still continuing to have federal employee health insurance subsidized by the taxpayer. And if he likes Obamacare so much, I’m going to give him an amendment that gives Obamacare to Justice Roberts," Paul told the Daily Caller.

Members of Congress and their staffs received in August a perk most taxpayers won't get: a 75 percent subsidy for their cost of their own health insurance pans. Paul said he is on board with a plan floated by Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana to do away with that subsidy as well.

Paul and a growing chorus of conservative lawmakers have expressed outrage over an "Obamacare fix" that gives special privilege to government, even as most uninsured taxpayers will have to use the Affordable Care's healthcare exchanges.

Paul's fight marks a capstone to a long political battle over the law, and comes after the House voted Friday to defund Obamacare and as Senate Republicans take up the fight this week amid concerns that the law is unaffordable, unwieldy, and has been decidedly weakened from its original intent, Politico reported.

Already one of the GOP's chief Obamacare opponents in the Senate is facing deep opposition within his own party.
