Poll: Dems More Satisfied With Presidential Choice Than Republicans

More Democrats are feeling positive about their presidential election choice than Republicans, according to a Gallup poll.

In the poll conducted June 14-15 in telephone interviews with 1,021 adults:

• Seventy-one percent of Democratic voters or those who lean in that direction are happy with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
• Fifty-nine percent of Republican voters or those who lean in that direction are happy with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Both parties have shown marked change since the election narrowed down to Clinton and Trump.

• The Democrats' 71 percent is down from 77 percent in May when both Clinton and Bernie Sanders were in the race.
• The Republicans' 59 percent is up slightly from May's 56 percent, its lowest number in 2016. But it shows a sizable drop from 68 percent in April, when Ted Cruz was still in the Republican race with Trump.

The poll shows that both Clinton and Trump are divisive among their party's voters. Seventy-five percent of Republicans are favorable toward Trump, which is lower than April's number of 83 percent. Clinton's supporters among Democrats are on the rise, however — her support is at 83 percent, while it was at 75 percent in April.

The poll also noted the disappointment of Republicans and Democrats as the field has dwindled to Trump and Clinton.

• Thirty-one percent of Republicans who are unfavorable toward Trump believe a Republican candidate is running who will make a good president. That's lower than the 53 percent of Trump's non-fans who thought that in April.
• Forty-four percent of Democrats who are unfavorable toward Clinton believe a Democratic candidate running will make a good president. That's lower than the 65 percent of Clinton's non-fans who thought that in April.

Republicans in the Gallup poll are more likely to say that candidates in the race are talking about issues they care about. Seventy-one percent of Republicans say candidates are discussing vital issues, while only 61 percent of Democrats believe that.

More Republicans believe that vital topics are being talked about, up from 62 percent in mid-May.

Fewer Democrats believe the important topics are being discussed, down from 66 percent in mid-May.

Previous Gallup poll results have shown that Republicans are paying more attention to the election than Democrats, at 47 percent, compared to 39 percent of Democrats.
