Talk show host Jerry Springer denounced the Republican healthcare bill during an interview on MSNBC Sunday, questioning the GOP assertion that their plan gives Americans more freedom.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., on CBS' "Face the Nation" declined to speculate as to how many people would lose insurance coverage if the American Health Care Act is passed.
"I can't answer that question," Ryan said. "It's up to people."
He elaborated, "Here's the premise of your question. Are you going to stop mandating people buy health insurance? People are going to do what they want to do with their lives because we believe in individual freedom in this country."
"That is so disgusting," Springer said after seeing a clip of Ryan's answer.
"First of all, what is all this business about people ought to have freedom? What kind of freedom do you have if you can't afford to take your kid to the doctor, that you can't afford to pay the medical bills, that you're always one doctor's visit away from going bankrupt?
"That's not freedom, that doesn't give you freedom to make any kind of decisions because, 'oh my gosh, I've gotta have my family members live. I gotta get to a doctor before it's the emergency room.' That is so indecent," he continued.
"I don't care if you're a liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat, it's not about that. It's about being a good human being, and if you're a good human being you've got to know that the first thing, if you love America, is to love Americans and ensure Americans can get health insurance even if they don't have any money.
"That should be a guaranteed right."
