John Boehner, the former Republican Speaker of the House, said that President Donald Trump is "still learning how to be president."

Speaking at the KPMG Global Energy Conference, he added that Trump has performed well with foreign policy, and said international leaders are happy that he appears willing to take action against terror groups.

However, he said Trump has had less success in other areas, including reforming healthcare.

"Everything else he's done has been a complete disaster," Boehner said at the conference.

The former speaker said he never pictured that Trump would be president. He said Trump was a friend and golf partner who would offer Boehner encouragement.

"But president? I just never envisioned him in that role."

Axios reported that Boehner had given Trump advice earlier in May, urging him to sign the $1 trillion bill and avoid a government shutdown.

Trump has earned praise from Boehner before. In December, he said Trump is like Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th president.

"If you look at what Teddy Roosevelt did, he came in to do big things. I think Donald Trump wants to do big things."
