Liz Cheney Defends Opposition to Gay Marriage

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Liz Cheney is defending her opposition to same-sex marriage -- a position that has already drawn criticism from her gay sister, Mary.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Cheney said that she loves "Mary very much, I love her family very much. This is just an issue on which we disagree."

In August, Mary Cheney in a Facebook post said that Liz Cheney is "dead wrong" on the issue of gay marriage.

The daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney is challenging fellow Republican Sen. Mike Enzi in Wyoming's GOP primary.

A conservative super PAC launched an ad in October taking aim at Cheney for opposing a constitutional ban on gay marriage and supporting a State Department decision to extend benefits to same-sex couples.

But Cheney said that she continues to hold the same views on those issues, even as she opposes same-sex marriage.

"I stand by both of those positions," Cheney said, later adding, "I do believe it's an issue that's got to be left up to the states. I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage."

In the same interview, Cheney attacked Enzi for being a part of the so-called 2009 “Gang of Six” that negotiated with Obama on health care reform.

“We’ve got the code of the West in Wyoming,” she said. “And Rule No. 10 is: ‘Know where to draw the line.’ ”

While she acknowledged that Obamacare passed without a single Republican vote, she argued that Enzi and others gave the president “cover” and “running room.”
