It's neck-and-neck in Iowa for GOP presidential contenders Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz, a new poll shows.
According to a
Loras College survey released Thursday, the real estate billionaire has 26 percent support, and the Texas lawmaker 25 percent — well within the 4.4 percentage point margin of error.
Here are the results:
- Trump: 26 percent
- Cruz: 25 percent
- Florida Sen. Marco Rubio: 13 percent
- Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson: 8 percent
- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush: 6 percent
- Ohio Gov John Kasich: 4 percent
- New Jersey Gov Chris Christie: 3 percent
- Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: 3 percent
- Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul: 3 percent
- Former business executive Carly Fiorina: 2 percent
- Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum: 1 percent
"The Trump versus Cruz dynamic has defined the Republican race in the past couple of weeks. We are certainly seeing that here in Iowa," Christopher Budzisz, associate professor of politics and director of the Loras College Poll, said in a statement.
"Iowa voters have surprised in the past, so it is always wise to watch for out for a last-minute push by someone from back in the field. Sen. Rubio is the one most within striking distance at the moment, and 10 days is something of an eternity in caucus politics."
The fever pitch has been fanned in recent days by attacks on Cruz for his anti-Renewable Fuel Standard stance —which ethanol supporters say would
harm the corn-producing state — and on his
eligibility for the White House because of his birth to an American mother in Canada.
A plurality of voters in the Loras poll, 38 percent, said they expect Cruz will win Iowa. Trump came in second place on that question, with 29 percent saying they believe he’ll win the caucuses, according to the poll.
Forty-three percent of Republican caucus goers said they could still change their minds on who to support before Election Day.
