Rep. Louie Gohmert said Thursday President Donald Trump might have a case regarding his claims that the government electronically eavesdropped on Trump Tower last year.

The Texas Republican told The Hill it's "absolutely" plausible" that Trump's assertion, which he revealed on Twitter last Saturday, could be true.

"We don't know who all was being wiretapped. We don't know, so there could have been people at Trump Tower who were being wiretapped," Gohmert said.

"We don't know what all was done, we don't know what all was requested, but we know that we have an intelligence group — and maybe [the Department of] Justice is involved, maybe they're not — but it's out of control. We have to rein it in."

Gohmert was also asked if an independent prosecutor should be appointed to investigate any ties to Russia the Trump campaign may have had, along with the alleged wiretapping that took place.

"I think it wouldn't hurt because most of the Justice Department is more people loyal to [former] President [Barack] Obama than they are to the truth," Gohmert said. "I think we'd be better off if we had some independence."
