Connie Mack, Mary Bono Mack Announce Plans to Divorce

Former U.S. Reps. Connie Mack IV and Mary Bono Mack plan to end their marriage of just more than five years.

"We are saddened to announce that we have reached the difficult decision to end our marriage,” the former Republican lawmakers said on Saturday in a joint statement to the media. “We have nothing but respect and admiration for each other and we intend to remain on the friendliest of terms. We appreciate the love and support of our family and friends.”

The Macks both lost their bids to return to Washington in November, reports The Herald-Tribune in Sarasota, Fla.

Connie Mack's seat had been based in Fort Myers, Fla., but he gave it up to run against U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, for Senate. Mack is the son of former U.S. Sen. Connie Mack III.

Mary Bono Mack, before her defeat in November, had been in Congress since 1998. She is the widow of actor/singer Sonny Bono, who was elected to Congress in 1994 and served until his death in a skiing accident in 1998.

She won the Republican nomination for the special election to succeed Bono, and then won the special election on April 7, 1998, and then winning a full term later that same year in November. She was re-elected several more times since then, until Raul Ruiz defeated her in November.

The Macks have been married since December 2007, three years after Mack won his Congressional seat.
