Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has formally endorsed Republican Roy Moore in the Alabama Senate race, according to the Moore campaign.

News of the endorsement was reported by The Hill. Moore is the former chief judge of Alabama's Supreme Court.

"If there was ever a time to ensure that Republicans maintain a seat in the United States Senate, it is now," Lee said.

"That is why I am proudly endorsing Judge Roy Moore for United States Senate. Alabamians have the chance to send a proven, conservative fighter to the United States Senate and I am more than ready to welcome a trusted ally."

Moore will be running against Democrat Doug Jones in the December special election.

He was recently in Washington for meetings Republican Sens. Lee, Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky, Politico reported.

"I look forward to serving with him," Cruz said. "It is certainly the case that we need more strong conservatives in the Senate, and I have every reason to believe that's precisely the sort of senator he will be."
