Fox News' Judge Andrew Napolitano said Thursday morning that it looks like the president is trying to get his attorney general to resign.
President Donald Trump criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions in an interview with The New York Times released Wednesday, over the former senator's decision to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian election interference.
"Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else," Trump said.
"Jeff Sessions takes the job, gets into the job, recuses himself, which frankly, I think is very unfair to the president," he continued. "How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, ‘Thanks, Jeff, but I'm not going to take you.' It's extremely unfair — and that's a mild word — to the president."
The next morning, Napolitano defended Trump, saying that Sessions should have turned down the job if he was going to recuse himself.
"We have one of the biggest investigations the Justice Department has conducted since Watergate being run by someone who was not appointed by the president of the United States," Napolitano said.
"That's President Trump's frustration and I understand that."
He added, "The statement he made to The New York Times has to be just demoralizing to the Attorney General and to many, many good people in the Justice Department who work there.
"It sounds like the president is trying to get him to step down," said host Ainsley Earhardt.
"It does," Napolitano agreed.
