The "We the People" petition site created by the Obama administration and kept by President Donald Trump's team in its relaunched White House website got its first entries Friday – demanding he release his tax returns and divest his business and financial assets.
"The unprecedented economic conflicts of this administration need to be visible to the American people, including any pertinent documentation which can reveal the foreign influences and financial interests which may put Donald Trump in conflict with the emoluments clause of the Constitution," the tax petition reads.
It had collected 5,744 signatures a little more than four hours after the new president was sworn in. The current site policy calls for petitions that get over 100,000 signatures to get a response from the White House.
A second entry demanded all of Trump's business and financial assets be divested or put into "a truly blind trust": that petition had 414 signatures.
Politico, which first reported the anti-Trump petition drive, noted the president's taxes were a key issue during his election campaign. Trump has said he is being audited by the IRS, and he will release his returns when any audits are over.
Trump has also faced criticism for turning over his business to his sons.
