Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy supports Donald Trump's bid for the presidency, but advised him on Monday to stop firing back at every attack — especially to those from fellow Republicans.
"Donald, listen, don't be so sensitive," Duffy said on CNN's "The Situation Room. "Take the hit; let it roll off your back. And you know, look forward."
Trump should instead save his ammunition for Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama, Duffy said.
"But don't take shots at your own party," he said. "You have to be bigger than a guy who responds to every little, you know, flick that someone gives you. It doesn't work for party unity. And it divides our party."
Duffy said Trump doesn't have enough Republicans to win, so he needs to draw in as many as possible, along with independents and some "soft Democrats."
"Don't divide your party, and engaging in these kind of fights doesn't serve the mission of party unification," Duffy said.
The advice came after Trump shot back at GOP Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake on Sunday after Flake said earlier in the day that Trump's inconsistent policy positions are threatening to make Arizona — normally a safe Republican state — a tossup.
"I don't know what Jeff Flake is doing taking shots at Donald Trump, but Donald Trump has to rise above and unify the party," Duffy said. "As we have seen Arizona tighten, he needs guys like Jeff Flake on board if you're going to win."
