Illinois Democratic Congresswoman and Senate hopeful Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq, tweeted out disapproval of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's latest campaign gaffe, as the New York Post reported Tuesday.

On a post on her Facebook page, Duckworth went on to say "It's no surprise Donald Trump accepted a Purple Heart the 'easier' way today because that's the story of his life. He never sacrifices. He always has things handed to him."

Duckworth earlier started a petition on her website , calling for Trump to apologize for his comment about the ease of being gifted a Purple Heart from a veteran at a Virginia rally Tuesday.

"I always wanted to get the Purple Heart," Trump said. "This was much easier, but I tell you it was such an honor."

Duckworth, who is running against Republican incumbent Sen. Mark Kirk in Illinois this November, has been a frequent opposition of Trump.

"Donald Trump shows a lack of understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices of our service members and their families," Duckworth wrote. "I'm outraged that anyone seeking to be Commander in Chief of this great nation would show so little respect for our troops. Please join me in calling on Donald Trump to apologize."

Duckworth also used the Democratic National Convention to take shots at Trump, as Politico wrote last week.

"In Donald Trump's America, if you get knocked down, you stay down," Duckworth told the delegates. "By the way, Donald Trump, I didn't put my life on the line to defend our democracy so you could invite Russia to interfere in it.

"You are not fit to be Commander-in-Chief."
