A bill, endorsed by President Donald Trump, to overhaul the immigration system would cripple the nation's economy, The Washington Post said in an editorial on Wednesday.

The bill is sponsored by conservative Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and David Perdue, R-Ga., and the number of immigrants granted green cards for legal permanent residents would be cut to about 540,000 annually from roughly 1 million if the bill passed, the newspaper noted.

And it pointed out employment-based immigrants would be selected on a points system taking into account those who speak English and have higher levels of education.

But The Post claimed the bill would damage the nation's economic vitality. It said immigrants actually help boost the economy and cutting the number of legal immigrants by 50 percent would deprive businesses of needed labor.

It noted the U.S. birthrate is hitting new lows while baby boomers are starting to retire. The Post maintained the U.S. needs immigrant labor to continue its economic growth.

In economic terms, the bill makes little sense, the newspaper said. Fresh immigrants serve as "rocket fuel" for the overall economy.
