The Italian village of Capracotta reportedly got 100 inches of snow during 18 hours on Thursday.
The World Meteorological Organization is reviewing the snowfall total to confirm its accuracy; the 100 inches could be a new record snowfall in 24 hours.
The town, which sits at 4,662 feet in the mountains about 125 miles east of Rome, has about 1,000 residents.
The 100.8-inch snowfall, reported on the Italian weather website MeteoWeb, is
more than Boston got in January and February combined, CNN said.
Snowfall totals are difficult to verify, but the World Meteorological Organization is considering adding world snowfall extremes to
Archive of Weather and Climate Extremes, The Washington Post reported.
“When we do so, we certainly will be investigating this interesting report from Italy as a possible record snowfall extreme,” WMO official Randall Cerveny said, according to the newspaper.
The currently accepted 24-hour world record is 90.6 inches, which fell in Mount Ibuki, Japan, in 1927, the Post said. The U.S. 24-hour record was set in 1921, when 75.8 inches of snow fell in Silver Lake, Colorado.
Capracotta’s massive snow forced residents to climb out of second-story windows and use skis to get from place to place.
“It was a spectacle that took our breath away. In some parts of the village the snow was like a long, white wall,”
Mayor Antonio Monaco said, according to the Daily Mail.
