"Star Trek" has landed at Seattle's EMP Museum for a 50th anniversary celebration, promising to explore in detail the series' pop culture influences that continue to pump out television series and movies.
More than 100 items will be on display in the grand "Star Trek" exhibit at the museum, including the costumes of all five "Star Trek" captains, outfits worn by the villain Khan in the 1982 and 2013 "Star Trek" films, along with the re-creation of the bridge of the Enterprise from the original series, according to the
Seattle Times.
"Fifty years after a show with modest ratings called 'Star Trek' first aired, its stories continue to echo worldwide," said the
EMP Museum's website. "Its famous opening line, 'To boldly go where no one has gone before…' encapsulates the heart of this iconic series: the dare to hope for a better world."
Exhibit curator Brooks Peck told
KOIN-TV that the "Star Trek" television series dared to push social boundaries on during the turbulent 1960s.
"It starts at a time, mid-60s, a time when there was a lot of social upheaval in the U.S.," said Peck, who spent two years pulling together the memorabilia for the exhibit. "Here you can see Captain Kirk's gold tunic and the command chair that he sat in and also the control panel that Chekov and Sulu would sit at, fly the ship and fire the phasers."
Peck said he believes that fans continue to be attracted to "Star Trek" because of the optimism it represents.
"It's a fun vision of what we could be," Peck said. "And fun is important, right? Because there's spaceships and there's aliens… crazy stuff which makes it really entertaining!"
The museum will host a member's only preview Friday before the exhibit opens to the public on Saturday. The exhibit will run at the museum until January, noted KOIN-TV.
The EMP Museum, founded by Microsoft's co-founder Paul Allen, opened in 2000 to celebrate the "risk-taking that fuels popular culture," noted
