The hacker group Anonymous announced a month ago that it would target ISIS online activities by taking down and exposing sites, and this week, it told ISIS, "You will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure."
Adopting the hashtag #OpISIS and a team name of Anonymous Red Cult, the
hackers posted on Pastebin Sunday: “ISIS; We will hunt you, Take down your sites, Accounts, Emails, and expose you... From now on, no safe place for you online... You will be treated like a virus, And we are the cure... We Own The Internet... We are Anonymous, We are Legion, We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect us.”
The group also posted a long list of Twitter accounts, sites, and emails that have already been “exposed and destroyed by Anonymous RedCult team.”
At the bottom of hundreds of sites, the group wrote, “More to come soon ... And Remember, We Own The Internet.”
BetaNews reported on the hackers' intentions a month ago. “This isn't the slippery slope that some may think it is. The group isn't attacking Islam, it is targeting the extremists responsible for the murders of people. That clarification makes it hard to not be behind them,” the site wrote. “After all, entire governments have been doing this in a less technological way.”
At the time, BetaNews reported Anonymous set up a Twitter account where it was posting which ISIS sites had been attacked, but that account has been suspended.
The Anonymous RedCult also put out its statement on a YouTube video.
Story continues below video.
In both statements, the hacker group starts out, “First, we need to clarify a few things. We Are: Muslims, Christians, Jews ... We Are hackers, crackers, Hacktivist, phishers, agents, spies, or just the guy from next door. We Are students, administrators, workers, clerks, unemployed, rich, poor. We are young, or old, gay or straight. We wear smart clothes or rugs, we are hedonists, ascetics, joy riders or activists. We come from all races, countries, religions, and ethnicity.”
