Bernard Fox, who played Dr. Bombay on “Bewitched,” died Wednesday of heart failure. He was 89.
The mustachioed actor, who was also well-known for his role as Col. Crittendon on “Hogan’s Heroes,” died Wednesday at a Los Angeles-area hospital, CBS News reported.
Fox started working in British TV before pursuing an acting career in America, the Daily Mail noted.
His first role as an actor came in 1955 on the first series to be broadcast on TV in the U.K., “Sixpenny Corner.”
Fox would later appear in “The Mummy,” “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo,” “The Dyke Van Dyke Show,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “McHale’s Navy” and “Columbo,” CBS News noted.
He also appeared in “Titanic” as Col. Archibald Gracie as well as “A Night to Remember,” which highlights the ship tragedy.
Fox is mostly known for his role on “Bewitched,” where he appeared for 19 episodes, dressing “in a different costume and hailing from a different part of the world” in each episode, the Daily Mail noted.
The famous actor was just 14 years old when he joined the theater, according to the San Francisco Gate. Shortly after, he took a break from acting to serve in the Royal Navy during World War II.
Overall, he’s appeared in more than 100 TV and film credits from 1956 to 2004.
Fox was born in 1927 in Port Talbot, Wales.
Fox is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; daughter Amanda; daughter-in-law Lisa, and two grandchildren. His daughter, Valerie, died in 2006.
