Bill Cosby Brings Out His Critics on Twitter With Meme Promo

By    |   Tuesday, 11 November 2014 12:47 PM EST

Bill Cosby's promotional hashtag was hijacked by Twitter users on Monday, who used "#CosbyMeme" to remind the world of past rape allegations against the comedian.

According to E! Online, it all began when Cosby (or his social media manager) posted a link to BillCosby.com/CosbyMeme with the message "Happy Monday" to his Twitter profile, asking people to use the linked pictures to create their own funny "meme."

The promotional team clearly thought the campaign would be lighthearted and fun, like the examples they gave on the website (seen in the tweet below).

The team should have known, however, that Cosby has been in the headlines these past few weeks for past rape allegations, a subject that's become a regular part of Hannibal Burress' stand-up routine.

"Bill Cosby has the f***ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate," Buress says in the bit, which has grown popular on YouTube.

"He just gets on TV – 'Pull your pants up, black people. I was on TV in the '80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.' Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby. So, brings you down a couple notches."

The allegations against Cosby were settled out of court in 2006, but the Internet saw an opportunity to have fun with the self-promoting hashtag, and, as Burress suggested, brought him down a few notches.
