Bill Murray Covers Bob Dylan, Overwaters Plant in New Film Preview

By    |   Tuesday, 07 October 2014 07:48 AM EDT

Bill Murray sings along to Bob Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm" in a delightful new teaser clip from his forthcoming movie, "St. Vincent."

The film, in which Murray plays a curmudgeonly military vet who befriends a 12-year-old kid, opens in select theaters on Friday, and goes nationwide October 24. Rolling Stone reported that "St. Vincent" originally premiered September 5 at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it punctuated the festivities of "Bill Murray Day."

Unlike Murray's karaoke rendition of Roxy Music's "More Than This" for the benefit of the lovely Scarlett Johansson in "Lost In Translation," his cover from Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" is charmingly unfocused, featuring the "Ghostbusters" great ambling around the porch smoking and watering his potted plant.

The Huffington Post pointed out that Murray's previous warbles include a lounger version of "Star Wars" on "Saturday Night Live" and "House of the Rising Sun" at a "Caddyshack" golf charity event earlier this year.

First-time director Ted Melfi told The Wall Street Journal that he convinced Murray to be in his film by calling a 1-800 number the actor maintains in lieu of an agent, publicist, or manager. Melfi was then asked to send a one-page letter to Murray's multiple houses, and so on and so forth until Murray gave the final "yes."

The "SNL" alum has also been tapped to voice Baloo the bear in an upcoming remake of Disney's "The Jungle Book" and, though he's shied away from doing a "Ghostbusters" reboot, has said he would be happy to see an all-female rendition.
