Billy Joel Plays Good Samaritan in NY, Helps Fallen Woman in Crosswalk

Billy Joel just happened to be in the right place at the right time this week when he lent a helping hand to a woman who had fallen in a crosswalk in East Hampton, New York.

Joel, 65, was driving through the town on his motorcycle Monday when he saw the woman fall. The "Piano Man" singer, wearing a baseball cap and a leather biker jacket, pulled over and helped emergency personnel in carrying the woman's belongings to the side of the road, according to the New York Post's Page Six.

The tabloid said that Joel then chatted up the woman on a roadside bench, making sure she was not injured before leaving on his motorcycle.

It was just Saturday that the Bronx native played to a sold out Madison Square Garden in his string of monthly concerts at the historic Manhattan venue.

"It was hard to imagine in the days before Joel's concert that I could still be roused by his hits, many of which have been so overplayed that they have at times become aural wallpaper," wrote Newsday's Valerie Kellogg.

"That's what happens when it comes to Joel — his songs are our memories, and the melodies, however predictable, never really get old. His music has been a constant for many Long Islanders, there as the backdrop to rides in the family station wagon, backyard barbecues, first crushes, college parties, nights at the bar, weddings, births, and funerals," Kellogg continued.

Joel is as busy as ever these days, performing at Fenway Park Thursday evening before returning to Madison Square Garden on July 2, Chicago's Wrigley Field on July 18, and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on July 26.

Joel also recently announced his support of a bill Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed with New York state legislators in an attempt to restrict the sale of elephant ivory and rhino horns.

"I wholeheartedly support the ivory sales ban bill pending in New York State," Joel wrote on his website last week. "I am a piano player. And I realize that ivory piano keys are preferred by some pianists. But a preference for ivory keys does not justify the slaughter of 96 elephants every day. There are other materials which can be substituted for piano keys."

"But magnificent creatures like these can never be replaced. Music must never be used as an excuse to destroy an endangered species. Music should be a celebration of life — not an instrument of death," his statement continued.
