The Bugatti Chiron set a new world “scratch off” record, going from 0 to 249 mph and back to 0 in just 42 seconds. Behind the wheel of the incredible feat was Juan Pablo Montoya of Formula One fame.
“The fastest I’ve ever been in a race car is 407 kmh in an Indy Car back in the day, so that was a new all-time speed record for me,” Montoya told Top Gear. “How many people go above 400 kmh (245 mph)? Ask Lewis Hamilton, it’s probably like 370 kmh.”
The Chiron’s 8.0-liter 16-cylinder engine uses four turbochargers to make 1500 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque. This, and its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic routes power to all four wheels, makes it easy to see why the Chiron obliterated any potential competition.
“Bugatti is the first car brand that not only calculates how fast a car can go from zero to 400 to zero on a computer,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “We actually drove it. Where others are satisfied with theory, we validate our data with real-life values. Just like we did with the Chiron.”
Bugatti intends on manufacturing just 500 of the new Chiron, and with a starting price tag of a cool $2,998,000, it’s easy to see why. At present, there are already 300 lucky car enthusiasts waiting for their very own limited edition Chiron.
“Our customers want the best of the best. This truly impressive performance further confirms that the Chiron is the world’s best super sports car,” Dürheimer reiterated.
In 2010 the Veyron Supersport won the land speed record for hitting 267.8 mph. In 2018 Bugatti aims to whiz past this record (and its own) to claim the title for the Chiron.
