Carrie Underwood shocked her fans at the Big Barrel Country Music Festival when she began rapping a mashup of her hit country song “See You Again” with Wiz Khalifa’s street version.
Although "See You Again" by Khalifa and Charlie Puth differs greatly from Underwood’s intimate and slower version featured on her 2012 album "Blown Away," the American Idol winner was still able to kill both Khalifa’s rap part and Puth’s chorus at the concert in Delaware last weekend.
Underwood was in the middle of her 21-song set when she began singing the rendition of "See You Again" she wrote with Hillary Lindsay and David Hodges,
said Rolling Stone. The star belted out her expected line, "It's been a long day without you, my friend, and I'll tell you all about it when I see you again," and then began rapping Khalifa’s and Puth’s track.
After conquering the rap, Underwood paused briefly to laugh at herself as the crowd roared with applause.
Underwood took to Twitter to thank her fans after the concert:
Khalifa and Puth released "See You Again" earlier this year as part of the "Furious 7" movie soundtrack. The song’s music video is a tribute to "Fast and Furious" actor Paul Walker who died in a 2013 car crash,
said US Magazine.
By contrast, Underwood said, her "See You Again" rendition “tells different stories to different people. It often means something different to each person who hears it. To many it’s a song about moving on after the death of a loved one – about wanting to see that person again, and knowing that eventually they will.” She also told
Time magazine that the song holds special meaning with military families.
A fan managed to capture the whole Underwood mashup on video:
