Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is worth of $820 million, and has opted to live in a Las Vegas trailer park with his pet alpaca.
The Daily Mail reported that Hsieh gave up his luxury condo last year, and moved into a 200-square-foot Airstream — just one of roughly 30 that occupy the lot, which he also owns. The lot — which was largely vacant before Hsieh's purchase — is also occupied by Tumbleweed Tiny Houses, smaller, wooden RVs.
The trailer park, which Hsieh has nicknamed "Llamapolis" in honor of his pet alpaca, Marley, attracts a great many personalities, however the ones who hunker down to live a while are often Silicon Valley computer programmers. Its design was partially inspired by the annual desert festival known as Burning Man.
Each trailer functions as a bedroom, and a campfire acts as a communal living room for all of the trailers. A shared kitchen inside of a shipping container is also available for use, and residents often watch movies on an outdoor projector screen.
"You’re pretty much forced to say hello," said resident and musician Daniel Park.
Hsieh, whose parents emigrated from Taiwan, sold Zappos to Amazon.com for $1.2 billion in 2009. He still runs the company, and draws a $36,000 salary.
He is a big proponent of Las Vegas, and has used $350 million to help redevelop the downtown area to make it more attractive to startups and other businesses.
