Actor Charlie Sheen has come to the defense of Brian Williams in a lengthy post on Twitter, saying the suspended NBC news anchor is the victim of a witch hunt.
Sheen, former star of the television series "Two and a Half Men" and "Anger Management," supported Williams in his "TwitLonger" post, calling the anchor's situation a "most surreal, unjust and mercurial moment."
"You are clearly the victim of a transparent and vile witch hunt," Sheen wrote on Twitter. "Erroneously 'staged' by hooligans, non coms, cowards and oligarchs, who's only desperate and hideous goal is to discredit the genius that they relied on for almost three decades."
"Now and forever you are a true patriot and a hero of mine until the day I leave this star-crossed imperfect Rock we call Earth," said Sheen.
NBC News President Deborah Turness announced on Tuesday that the network had suspended Williams, anchor of "NBC Nightly News," for six months without pay for making false claims about his experience during the Iraq War,
according to Politico.
"While on 'Nightly News' on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, Brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003," Turness said in a statement. "It then became clear that on other occasions Brian had done the same while telling that story in other venues. This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian’s position."
The Washington Post quoted sources inside NBC Wednesday that senior network officials seriously considered firing Williams when they discovered other "instances of exaggeration" in reference of his Iraq incident but settled on the suspension with no promises of his return afterward.
Williams' daughter, Allison Williams, is an actress and stars in the HBO series "Girls," which appeared in 2012,
according to TV Guide. She starred opposite Christopher Walken in the live production of "Peter Pan" on NBC that aired in December. She has not publicly commented on her father since the controversy erupted.
