Charter has decided that Time Warner Cable's much-maligned brand name should be dumped as part of its $65 billion merger of the cable television giants, reported CNN Money.

Charter will get rid of Time Warner Cable – whose name has become synonymous with poor customer service, noted Bloomberg – along with Bright House Cable and replace it with Charter Spectrum.

Bright House was also part of Charter's cable television mega merger that makes it one of the largest cable television providers in the country, said CNN Money.

"One of our first major initiatives in implementing the Charter Playbook is to streamline our product pricing and packaging and introduce our consumer-facing brand, Spectrum," Charter chief executive Tom Rutledge said in an email to employees, noted CNN Money. "This will be rolled out in a phased approach beginning this fall."

Time Warner's cable roots have been around since the formation of cable television and its name has been prominent among cable customers around the country when the Time Inc. and Warner Cable merger was announced in 1989, noted Time Warner.

American Television and Communications and Warner Cable became Time Warner Cable and NY1 News was launched in New York City in 1992.

But cable television customers have ranked Time Warner Cable as one of the worst in customer service for years, said Bloomberg. The American Customer Satisfaction Index recently gave Time Warner a score of 51 out of 100, tying Mediacom Communications for the worst overall rank in any industry.

"It's not surprising Charter wants to rebrand Time Warner Cable," David VanAmburg, ACSI's managing director told Bloomberg. "Charter has scored better than Time Warner Cable in recent years, so it could bode well for Time Warner Cable customers. But the data suggests leaps-and-bounds improvement could be difficult."

Some on social media appeared less than impressed by the upcoming name change.
