Rumors that actress Lily James was Photoshopped to appear to have a slimmer waist in the movie “Cinderella,” which opens March 13, are not true, the actress said.
“I have naturally a quite small waist,”
James told ABC in an interview with “Nightline.” “And on top of that I have a corset that pulled me in within an inch of my life."
She said the big skirt she wears in the film also makes her 17-inch waist look even smaller.
Director Kenneth Branagh also disputed claims that Richard Madden was wearing contact lenses to make his eyes appear bluer in his role as Prince Charming.
“He has very, very striking blue eyes and when beautifully lit by Haris Zambarloukos, these make for a very strong impact. We did not Photoshop Lily's waist ... everything you see is what was there,” Branagh said, according to ABC News.
Criticism about the appearance of James arose after a trailer for the movie was released,
with SheKnows.com blogger Charlotte Andersen writing: “She has apparently undergone rib removal surgery along with losing the majority of her internal organs from aggressive corsetry or Photoshop. I’m not sure which.”
"These gowns were beautifully crafted and they produced shapes that were very extreme," Branagh said.
James responded to the criticism in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.
“I think it’s all very hypocritical, and they contradict themselves, and they’re drawing more attention to it. I think all that stuff’s so negative, and you’ve got to let it wash over your head,” she said. “I’m so healthy. I’ve got hips and boobs and a bum and a small waist.”
