A missing 12-year-old Cranberry Lake, New York, boy was found safe after being reported missing on Saturday.
The boy, Harris A. Smith, told his parents he was going to walk the dog at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, but he
didn’t return home until Sunday morning, WWNY-TV reported.
Community members helped search the area upon hearing the boy was missing.
“It was unreal the amount of support we got from people that we don't even really associate with sometimes," the boy’s brother, Mackenzie Patnode, told WWNY-TV.
Harris was taken to a state police barracks, and officials haven’t reported how or where he spent the night.
His mother, Susan Sweeney Smith, posted on Facebook at about 10:45 a.m. Sunday that he was home safe. An earlier post that he was missing was shared about 20,000 times on Facebook.
An investigation of the incident continues.
Readers commented on the story with questions, speculation and relief.
“Wonderful news! We always prepare for the worst, so thankful to hear good news!” one reader commented.
“I want to know if the chihuahua is safe,” another wrote.
“Who knows what happened. Maybe the dog was his best friend and he left because he isn't happy at home. When a twelve year old leaves and doesn't come home in freezing weather there is probably a good reason why he didn't want to be there. Someone should look into that,” another reader wrote.
Twitter users also expressed relief.
