David Lee Roth says new music from popular hard rockers Van Halen will be out in about 18 months and fans can expect another tour, the singer told Sirius XM’s Jim Florentine.
In a colorful interview that touched on everything from past partying to the creative process involved in making music, Roth told Florentine he and band members Eddie, Wolfgang, and Alex Van Halen, are getting together three times a week to work on new music for the album.

"We start way, way, way in advance, 'cause we are eminently art-centric, which is a really fancy way of saying we really do generate all of the artwork, the graphics, etc. We start from scratch ourselves," he said on Sirius. "Same thing with the merchandise: If you buy a T-shirt, that was designed, literally, in my living room.”
Roth told Florentine taking artistic vision to that level requires learning different skills and “eighty-seven phone calls” to make sure it turns out.
“It’s not a question of can an artist think of a T-shirt, can an artist think of a stage design or create some new video visual graphic,” he told Florentine. “It’s knowing how to get it finalized; dreaming it up is one thing, being able to build it and then pack it up and move it around is a whole other skill set.”
But Van Halen makes it happen because they’re all committed musicians.
“I write lyrics routinely, it’s a perishable skill. And the band plays together routinely,” Roth said. “I think we’re one of the few acts at our age, in our position in the music industry who still enjoys doing what we do.”
The band’s most recent album, “A Different Kind of Truth,” came out in 2012, but before that, there was a 14-year gap in Van Halen albums. Fans can heave a sigh of relief they won’t have to wait that long this time.
