A deadly boiler explosion near Soulard, a neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, left at least three people dead and four injured.
The incident happened just before 8 a.m. Monday near at Loy-Lange Box Company, according to Fox News.
St. Louis City Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said that a van-sized piece of the boiler flew about 500 feet into the air before crashing into the roof of a nearby laundry business -- Faultless Healthcare Linen, The Associated Press reported.
A person who was at the box company at the time of the explosion was killed immediately, according to the AP. Two others were killed when a piece of the boiler crashed into the laundry business. Of the four people that were injured in the incident, two of them are said to be in critical condition.
Fire department responders were able to rescue one person who was pinned underneath the boiler at Faultless Healthcare Linen.
Jenkerson said the boiler weighed about a ton and a half and was at least 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, according to the AP.
The explosion also caused an 8-foot pipe to crash into the roof of the Pioneer Industrial Corp., which is located near Loy-Lange. No injuries were reported there.
Jenkerson said the explosion appears to be an accident, and an investigation is ongoing.
Faultless Healthcare Linen’s CEO released a statement responding to the incident, saying, "We immediately will be giving what practical help we can to our employees and their families. We are grateful to the firefighters and other emergency responders who have acted heroically in response to this tragic event."
The explosion comes after the company has paid more than $12,700 in fines related to three investigations since 2014, but it is unclear if those citations were related to the boiler or other equipment, the AP reported.
