An Alberta, Canada, man got a $78 speeding ticket for going only 1 kilometer per hour (.6 mph) over the speed limit when he passed an officer's vehicle (legally) on the road Friday.
Mathieu Gagne said the peace officer was driving below the speed limit so he took advantage of the dotted line that signals a passing zone, the National Post reported. Once he passed, though, the officer pulled Gagne over.
“That was pretty ballsy of you,” Gagne said the officer told him, the National Post reported. The officer also reportedly said Gagne's action was disrespectful and issued him a ticket for going 101 kilometers per hour in a 100 kph (about 62 miles per hour) zone.
Gagne’s girlfriend posted about the ticket on Facebook and thousands shared and commented about it.
“This is a speeding ticket. It’s demerits. That goes on my record. It goes on my insurance. My insurance goes up,” Gagne said, CTV reported.
On Monday, Gagne learned he wouldn’t have to pay the ticket after all because a Sturgeon County representative told him that “upon further review,” the officer had only estimated his speed and did not record it on radar or laser as he had indicated on the ticket, CTV News reported.
Sturgeon County spokesperson Gwen Wolansky said the officer who issued Gagne the ticket will not face punitive action for doing so, CTV reported.
Gagne is happy to have the situation over with.
“This kind of stuff shouldn’t happen,” he said, according to the National Post.
