An Eggo recall was announced by the Kellogg Company, targeting 10,000 cases of the Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles that could be potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Kellogg said in its announcement that routine tests of the product picked up the possible contamination and that the company has received no reports of illness from the waffles.

The recall affects the 10-pack waffles with the UPC code 38000 40370 with the "best used" date of Nov. 21, 2017 or Nov. 22, 2017.

The suspected product was distributed in 25 states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune system, noted the CDC.

A person with Listeriosis, which is spread through the gastrointestinal tract, usually has fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, wrote the CDC. They may also suffer from stiffness, nausea, and abdominal pain, according to Kellogg. A Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
