The alleged mistress of ex-NFL player Buster Barnett kidnapped his wife at gunpoint, then shot and killed her before taking her own life, police in Georgia said Friday.
"She was upset about a trip that his wife was going on with him and it was one she didn’t know about," Officer Charlene Watson-Fraser, spokesperson for Clayton Police,
told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Wife Sandra Barnett, 58, was on the phone with a friend when Buster's girlfriend Lisa Brown, 49, showed up at her home on Wednesday. The friend told police she could hear a struggle. Brown then drove Barnett across state lines.
A police chase ensued the following day after Brown's Dodge Durango was spotted. Brown then stopped the car in the middle of Interstate 20 in Alabama, and apparently shot Barnett, then herself.
"The driver stopped in the middle of the highway, pulled out a handgun and shot [Barnett] and then turned the gun on herself," Watson-Fraser said.
The vehicle, as well as Brown's home in Lithonia, were both under Buster Barnett's name.
"He said he was trying to help her out," explained Watson-Fraser.
Sandra Barnett was a middle school teacher, working primarily with special needs students.
"Everybody just remembers this bubbly, happy spirit — just happy," said co-worker Nimet Muhammad,
according to USA Today. "Every day at work, you could just count on her."
Clayton County Police Capt. Richard Gandee said Brown had a criminal history.
"Lisa Brown was actually on probation for kidnapping out of the state of Texas," he explained. "She had kidnapped her child that she had lost custody of, and the jurisdiction down there had to track her for like three days to find her."
Buster Barnett, 56, played tight end for the Buffalo Bills from 1981 to 1984.
