Two Fisher brand walnut products were voluntarily recalled on Wednesday because of salmonella contamination detected during sampling by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son, which makes nuts, dried fruits and mixes under the Fisher and Harvest Valley Orchard brands, recalled the Fishers eight-ounce chopped walnuts and its eight-ounce pecan cookie pieces packaged in plastic bags, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The recalled packages have "best by" dates of Oct. 31, 2015, and Nov. 3, 2015.

"To date, (John B. Sanfilippo & Son) has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with the items listed above," said a news release by the Elgin, Illinois-based company posted on the FDA's website.

"This voluntary recall is the result of a routine sampling program conducted by the FDA in the retail marketplace which revealed that a package of Fisher Chopped Walnuts contained Salmonella."

The company said stores with the suspected packages are located in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The company urged that the packages be returned.

"Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems," according to the release on the FDA website.

"Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis."

It was at least the second time in 2014 that walnuts were involved in a recall. In May, Sherman Produce, in St. Louis, voluntarily recalled walnuts comprising of 241 cases of bulk walnuts packaged in 25-pound bulk cardboard boxes and Schnucks brand 10-ounce trays because of possible with Listeria monocytogenes contamination, noted the FDA.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.
